By definition, an emerging technology is one who's science, basic principles, and theory are understood, and at least some useful applications are recognized; but the potential is mostly unfulfilled, as evidenced by a lack of significant products.

Although emerging technologies drive innovations for years to come, their integration into current manufacturing processes requires a more sophisticated set of rules. Specifically, they have an impact on assembly technology, including manufacturing requirements for lower cost and higher reliability, infrastructure and equipment selection, fabrication and automation for high volume manufacturing.

Occasionally, an emerging technology is at odds with prevailing processes, such that it becomes disruptive, dislodging the established norm by a paradigm shift to a superior new approach...

Dr. Ken Gilleo of ET-Trends LLC can help guide you through transitions related to emerging technologies. He holds a Ph.D. in chemistry earned under a full NASA scholarship and has developed new products for thirty years. Ken is an inventor in electronics, circuitry, materials, nanotechnology and packaging, especially for MEMS, and he holds dozens of US patents and their foreign equivalents.
